Taming is a delicate balance between narcotics, food, and creating a safe space for your unconscious dinosaur to rest during the process.
Things to Know Before Taming
Location
One of the most frustrating experiences a survivor can have is being attacked during a taming session. Aggressive dinosaurs can and will attack your new tame while it’s still unconscious. If you’re able, build a taming pen to keep potential predators out. If you don’t have a pen, make sure you have weapons and ammunition ready to take on potential predators.
Traps and Tranquilizers
You’ll also need traps and tranquilizers to take down the dinosaur that you want to tame. The traps can be things like bolas, bear traps, or player-built pens with gates. Things that tranquilize dinosaurs include narco berries, narcotic, narcotic arrows, tranquilizer darts, and shocking tranquilizer darts. Each has different effects. Keep in mind that too many narcotics can kill your tame during the process so make sure you’re using a safe and effective method for the creature you’re targeting.
Taming Food
You should always check on the best foods to feed a tame. It’s different depending on which dinosaur you’re working with. For example:
The Rex prefers exceptional kibble, then raw mutton, and then lambchop. The Raptor prefers parasaur kibble, then raw mutton, and then raw prime meat. The Pteranodon prefers dodo kibble, then raw mutton, and then raw prime meat.
Using a more preferred food helps speed up taming. On a level 50 pteranodon, it takes 12 minutes to tame with dodo kibble but more than 17 minutes with raw prime meat. If you use something very low on their preference list like cooked fish meat, it can take more than an hour. Before I start a tame, I always consult the Dodorex Taming Calculator. It tells you what foods are most effective, how many pieces of the chosen taming food you’ll need, and how long it can take your tame to starve. Make sure to input the level of the animal you’re taming for the best possible results.
Check Your Companion
When you are exploring location to tame a dino, check if you companion dino to passive. Your tamed companion can be in three stages:
Aggressive – They fight any Dino that comes their way. In this stage, they can even attack their fellow tamed members too.Neutral – If some attacks them or you (the owner), they will fight. This means, they can interrupt your prey or even kill them first. Passive – In this stage, they will not attack any Dino even if they attack them or are lower than their dominance.
Tag Along With Your Tribe Member
If you’re playing a PVP game, we recommend you join a tribe. This not only protects you from other players, but your tribe members can be an immense help on your taming process. They can assist you in taming resources and save you a significant time of hunting and gathering. You can also tag along with your tribe member to tame a stronger dino.

How To Get Taming Food in ARK?
Taming food can be anything from raw prime meat — obtained from killing high-level dinosaurs like a t-rex or a brontosaurus — to raw fish meat available from any fish. Kibbles tend to be some of the most effective taming foods and must be made with cultivated ingredients, stolen eggs, and a cooking setup.
